Security domain in SIM, Private APN
Our PathTech 3-C SIM card is the most secure element within the connectivity infrastructure. Our SIM cards can be provisioned with a security domain that can be used for key management and authentication for cellular data connectivity and for the authentication of ono-cellular (Bluetooth) devices that are connected to the cellular hub. An Access Point Name (APN) is the point of entry onto an IP network, for data originating from or terminating to, any cellular device. An APN can be either private or public. A private APN ensures that data only traverses a private network and in separated from public internet data. Private APNs offer customers the ability to configure various settings such as private IP address ranges, static or dynamic addressing as well as preferred authentication techniques. From a security perspective, devices that are connected via a private APN are only visible to other devices on the same APN. This makes private APN’s a superior solution when compared to using a public internet APN or any other shared internet access. When an APN is used in conjunction with fixed-line or VPN backhaul terminating at an organizations’ datacenter, the data remains on a private data network between the remote terminal and the datacenter. The APN solution thus offers a secure mobile VPN. This architecture offers considerably more security while eliminating the additional data overhead generated by software-based VPN’s.
